Before joining Cardiff University in 2017 Derek has taught at Shakespeare’s Globe, London, University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and Queen’s University, Belfast. His first book, Shakespeare, Revenge Tragedy and Early Modern Law: Vindictive Justice, came out with Palgrave in 2016. He has since been working on a project entitled ‘Rogues’ Licence: Counterfeiting Authority in Early Modern England’, for which he has been awarded fellowships at the Folger Shakespeare Library (Washington), the Huntington Library (California), and the Newberry (Chicago). His research focuses on the intersection between literature, bureaucracy, and forgery.
In 2018 Derek was named one of the British Academy’s ‘Rising Stars’, for his initiative addressing academic precarity, ECASurvival.com. Derek’s work has by definition been interdisciplinary, and since his PhD work in law and literature he has been increasingly drawn to social history and the potential for Shakespeare to be used to consider current social problems including homelessness.
