Matthew is an early career lecturer at Cardiff School of Engineering working within the Structural Performance group. He completed his PhD in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of aerospace structures in 2013, prior to that he received his MEng in Mechanical Engineering, both at Cardiff University. He was worked on a variety of industrially focussed research projects looking at detecting damage in aircraft structures, developing SHM systems and energy harvesting for reliable power sources.
His most current research focus is developing strategies for detecting damage using audible sound waves in carbon fibre composite structures, in order to develop a non-contact damage detection system. Matthew is keen to explore signal processing techniques and algorithms that could be used for damage detection which could lead to more optimised and safer aircraft.
