Simon is a Reader in Nuclear Materials and was appointed to the Nuclear Futures Institute in March 2018 (http://nubu.nu/simon-middleburgh). His research is focused on developing new nuclear materials for next generation nuclear systems, investigating material behaviour in extreme environments, and combining materials modelling techniques with experimental methods. Simon has over 70 peer reviewed journal articles and 13 patents on nuclear fuels and other components.
Simon completed his Ph.D. at Imperial College London in 2012 working on advanced nuclear fuels and materials. He then took up a Research Leader position at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Australia before joining Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB in Västerås, Sweden where he used his methods to advance materials development and fuel performance modelling methods.
Along with his ecomodernist propensities, he’s a dedicated father of two and likes nothing more than teaching his 2- and 4-year-old children about dinosaurs, space and the natural world.
