Rowena obtained her degree in Microbiology from Aberystwyth University and went on to complete her PhD ‘the effect of manuka honey on the cell cycle of MRSA’ using microbiology and molecular techniques at Cardiff Metropolitan University. She is currently a lecturer of microbiology within the department of biomedical sciences at Cardiff Met. Alongside teaching, her research interests have continued along the theme of the potential for use of novel antimicrobial agents in healthcare. Of particular interest are the mode of action of novel agents on bacteria of clinical interest and the ability to potentiate the efficacy of antibiotics against antibiotic resistant bacteria. It is the aim that data collected in these in vitro studies could help reveal how novel antimicrobial agents might be applied in clinical settings for use in chronic health conditions e.g. cystic fibrosis and diabetic foot ulcers.
Rowena has moved to Swansea University in 2017 where she is a Lecturer in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the College of Medicine.
