Gillian studied for her BA in French and History at Trinity College, Dublin and her MPhil at the Sorbonne before returning to Trinity to complete a doctoral thesis that looked at French travel writing about London and New York. She taught at the University of Stirling and the University of Limerick before being appointed lecturer in French Studies at Bangor University in 2012. Gillian’s most recent work is focused on visual culture and urban renewal. Working at the intersections of cultural geography, politics, ethnography and aesthetics, she asks questions about the ethics and politics of how particular visual media (from street art to digital virtualizations) inform our everyday experience of the changing city. She is passionate about exploring the ways in which art and design shape our perception and experience of the world at the levels of the personal, the social and the environmental.
Gillian is currently a Senior Lecturer in French (Urban Humanities) in the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University.
