James obtained his BA in Medical Sciences from the University of Oxford. He subsequently took up the von Clemm Fellowship at Harvard University, where he worked on fetal brain imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital. James returned to the University of Oxford to complete his DPhil (PhD) in Clinical Neurosciences at the Oxford Centre for fMRI of the Brain. He was subsequently awarded a Junior Research Fellowship from University College, Oxford.
In 2017, James relocated to South Wales to take up a Sir Henry Wellcome Fellowship at the newly expanded Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC). His current research interests focus on how the human brain supports dexterity, using methods such high-field MRI and electrophysiology.
James is passionate about bridging the gap between basic and translational neuroscience, engaging with community, charity, and industry partners to understand and rehabilitate the decline in dexterity with age.
