Helena is Lecturer in Modern Asian History at Cardiff University, specialising in modern China and its global connections. She studied in Lisbon, London, Taipei, and Oxford, and holds a DPhil (PhD) in History from St Antony’s College, Oxford. She previously held a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at the University of Bristol and lectureships at Oxford and Bristol. Helena’s research focuses on the international, political, and social history of the Second World War and early Cold War period in East Asia. She has written on topics such as resistance and collaboration in neutral colonial territories, refugees, prisoners of war, women and cultural diplomacy, and filmic representations of World War Two. A collaborative project on histories of Wales-Asia connections is amongst her current projects. She is particularly keen to forge new connections with Welsh Crucible participants working in the creative arts and heritage sectors, as well as those interested in issues of multilingual and multicultural communities in the past and in the present.
