Aled obtained his BSc degree in Microbiology at Cardiff University and went on to complete a PhD in Medical/Molecular Microbiology at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. He completed various postdoctoral positions at the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences (Nottingham University), Biomedical Sciences Department (Cardiff Metropolitan University) and the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Group (Swansea University), before becoming a lecturer in Applied Medical Sciences, Biochemistry, and Genetics (Swansea University). Aled’s current research focusses on the use of natural products (such as manuka honey) to help alleviate the symptoms of problematic bacterial infections within the cystic fibrosis lung. He is also looking into the mechanistic effects that give manuka honey its broad antibacterial properties. Aled is keen to share his microbiology knowledge and develop interdisciplinary research.
