Charlie obtained an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Bath. She then went on to complete her DPhil at the University of Oxford in 2020, with Prof. Kate Watkins. During her DPhil, she contributed to a large randomised control trial looking at whether brain stimulation can enhance fluency in people who stutter (INSTEP trial). Subsequently, she moved to Munich for a fellowship at the Institute for Phonetics and Speech Processing, Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU), Munich. Charlie joined Bangor University as a lecturer in Psychology in October 2022. Her work combines brain stimulation techniques (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), brain imaging (MRI) and measures of speech movements (Electromagneticarticulography, vocal tract MRI) to investigate the neural processes underlying speech production in diverse speaker populations including those who stutter and have Parkinson’s disease.
