Daryl is a Lecturer in the School of Physics & Astronomy at Cardiff University. His research is focused on using compound semiconductors in the fabrication of photonic integrated circuits – man-made structures that can control light (or photons) on semiconductor chips in similar ways to how integrated electronic computer chips control electrons – which will one-day be used in the construction of an optical quantum computer. Daryl obtained his MSci and PhD at the University of Durham before working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of St Andrews and the FOM Institute AMOLF (a Dutch physics institute in Amsterdam). After a Marie-Curie fellowship in quantum photonics at the University of Bristol, Daryl accepted the Lectureship in Cardiff to pursue his research at the Institute of Compound Semiconductors. Daryl wants to use his public outreach activities to increase the impact of his work for the benefit of Wales.
