Welsh Crucible 2011
Ned’s first degree was in Medical Microbiology and he worked as a Clinical Scientist before completing a PhD at Swansea University, during which he cloned antibiotic biosynthetic genes for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. He undertook postdoctoral research in DNA repair and then thyroid cancer, before joining the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Research Group at Cardiff University Medical School. He is now a Senior Lecturer in the group, and undertakes research that unites his interests in microbiology and cancer genetics. HPV causes 5% of all cancer, and the aim of Ned’s research is to use knowledge of the biology of HPV infection to improve prevention and treatment of HPV associated diseases. Ned really enjoys working with some very talented people, at the interface between basic science and clinical medicine.
Ned has been promoted to Reader in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University.
