Emily obtained her BA in dance, theatre and psychology at Pomona College in California. She was then awarded a Fulbright fellowship to perform cognitive psychology research at the University of Otago in New Zealand, where she completed her MSc. She returned to the USA for a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at Dartmouth College, where she also performed and toured as a dancer. After postdocs at Nottingham and the Max Planck Institute, she took up faculty posts at Radboud University Nijmegen (NL) and Bangor University, where she currently works as a senior lecturer. As the director of the Social Brain in Action Laboratory, she uses dance, gymnastics and robots to explore how the human brain learns and perceives new actions. Two of her professional passions include advocating for women in science and exploring new ways to inform and engage the public with human neuroscience research.
Emily was promoted to Professor in the School of Psychology at Bangor University. Emily has now relocated to the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Glasgow, where she is Professor of Social Robotics.
